16 Jun How do I get the right measurements for my new loupes?
Taking measurements
Historically loupes companies would send representatives to practices and homes across the country. Here they would take a number of measurements to build your loupes and let you try on a choice of frames and optics.
One of the principle ways we are able to build high quality loupes at affordable prices is by providing an alternative to the historical method of taking measurements.
Our remote modelling method has been working even more favourably since COVID restrictions have changed the way we’re living and working. Our tried and tested method of the measurements enables us to build loupes to an extremely high degree of accuracy.
This blog post will detail the measurements that are required, how to take them and what we do with them to build your loupes.
Working Distance
This measurement gives a vertical range in which to build the loupes so that the focal point is at the correct distance from your eyes. Ideally you will need to sit in your working environment with a good upright posture and a strong core. Ensure you are not hunched over or sitting in a position that is not normal or comfortable for you. If you have worked without loupes for many years take extra consideration to ensure that you are sitting with a straight back, we want to make sure that your new loupes prevent further or future back pain and problems.
Then, holding a measuring tape between the corner of your eye and the area you are working in take a maximum and minimum reading taking consideration for larger/smaller patients or particular work you undertake that may affect your positioning. Have a photo taken of this position with the tape measure in place as in the image below. It can be sensible to remeasure this 2-3 times to make sure you are getting the same/a similar reading every time.
Every working distance has a focal trough or otherwise known as depth of field, this is the range that one can focus within at a specific working distance. This is usually 7-8cms above or below your optimum working distance. This depth of field usually reduces as the magnification increases. Getting the right working distance ensures you sit correctly with a good posture, if you start to lean forward or slump the image will become unclear, hence the correct working distance disciplines you to adopt the correct posture.
Facial measurement
These measurements are used to build the loupes and frames to ensure that they are ergonomically best suited for your individual face shape.
To take these measurements we need three pictures as shown below of the front and both sides of your face. The camera needs to be 30-40cm away from your face and a ruler held in the positions shown.
These photos enable us to advise on the best choice of frame and build the optics so that they are anatomically perfect.
Once we have all these measurements they can be emailed to sales@ukloupes.co.uk or WhatsApp’d to the Ukloupes account 07779442529. This remote modelling procedure has proved so successful that it enables us to offer a guaranteed fit service. When you receive your loupes, you have a 30-day trial period within which we can make any adjustments free of charge.
If you have any problems taking these photos or require some clarification, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
Kindest regards,
